What are hemorrhoids?
Veins in and around the rectum can become irritated from pressure, causing the hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are not painful but may bleed. Sometimes internal hemorrhoids bulge outside the anus, causing a prolapsed hemorrhoid. These may shrink back eventually, or can be pushed back.
External hemorrhoids can be painful and itchy and may crack and bleed. A blood clot may form, causing the tender lump on the edge of the anus. You may see the blood on toilet paper or in the toilet after bowel movements.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Constipation in the main cause of hemorrhoids. You're more likely to develop hemorrhoids as you age or if your parents had them. Pregnancy can also cause hemorrhoids, but for most, it's only temporary. Obesity, straining during bowel movements, sitting too long on the toilet, standing or lifting too much can also cause hemorrhoids.
